Got to see Daniel Johnston performing live at Warsaw in Broolyn ( thanks, Terence!)
He shed some new light on Beatles classics like Help! and I'm So Tired.
If you don't know his music or his amazing story check out the documentary called The Devil And Daniel Johnston.
Look whats cool on YouTube these days:
Both budding musicians also play their own original tunes but I put the covers here because covers are awesome!
I saw Jose Gonzales perform last week in Brooklyn. He is one of those rare performers that can completely transfix a huge room when he is all alone on stage with only a guitar. Here's his cover of The Knife's Heartbeats - it might sound familiar because it was used in that Sony Bravia bouncing balls ad.
The original version of the song by The Knife is really too awesome to ignore plus this video of people skateboarding and animated birds - might actually be cooler than the Sony Bravia rubber ball ad.
Both make me cry rivers - both versions of the song, i mean, not both videos - rubber balls and animated birds alone don't activate my tear ducts, I don't think.
Dear Chan Marshall -
I do not know you personally but I was lucky enough to see you perform live back in those dark days of your early career. It was at the Black Cat in DC - the crowd was so thrilled to see you in person. Your voice was even more amazing an soulful than the recordings had captured. Yet, you never completed a single song. In fact, I think we only hear that trademark howl for a second here and there before you'd mumble 'sorry, no, that's not the right chord, shit I suck at piano/guitar, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry'. We weren't sorry. We'd all heard about this 'act' but seeing it in person you could tell that it was more than an act. The crowd tried so hard to be supportive, hushing each other (you could hear a pin drop!) and trying to convince you to keep going with something, anything. We wanted so much to experience and feel close to the voice that perfectly echoed our own pains and heart aches. And, yet the singer herself was in so much pain that she could scarcely engage with us, not even to look up from under the drape of hair that concealed much of her face.
So, I feel lucky that I get to see now for my own eyes this brilliant transformation you undertook for yourself and as a performer, for your fans. This video brought me to tears to see how much fun you were having on live TV , no less - genuinely enjoying your talent and loving the people back who love your music. Fuck, that's what it's all about!!
Should we not all be doing that for ourselves in whatever we do - respecting ourselves and our talents and the people that love us?
Chan, you are a hero, a rare example of a young talented person taking a big scary step towards loving yourself more. Not being afraid to make your work and life better by taking responsibility for yourself and what you put out there in the world. No doubt your music and your message will ring loud and clear with many people for a long time to come,
thanks for sharing it with me!

Today's moment of video joy. The beauty pageant contest's talent is brilliant.
Too bad she wasn't trying to write a sketch for SNL.
